@38

@38 is an exciting extended day provision that we have designed to support our working parents who require flexibility outside school hours. We run a fully managed programme which is overseen by our full-time teaching staff who ensure that children are well-cared for and engaged in fun activities whilst on site. @38 offers prep time alongside an array of organised activities: multisport options, puzzle building and board games, creative and craft sessions as well as free play. All of the activities are tailored to meet the needs of the specific age groups, making use of the fabulous facilities on our Alleyn Park site. Spaces such as the library, sports hall, playgrounds and quiet areas will all be used to provide the children with exciting, stimulating and relaxing activities, depending on their preference. The children are provided with breakfast in the morning and dinner in the evening.

Betws Building

Opened in 1995, the Betws Building is the main classroom block for the Middle and Upper Schools. The spacious classrooms provide form rooms that act as bases for the boys as they move from one specialist teacher to the next. At the top of the building you can find the IT suite as well as a separate space that is used to teach robotics.

The Betws Building is named after Betws-y-Coed, the village in the North of Wales which the Dulwich Prep community were evacuated to during the Second World War.

Link Building and Art Room

The Link Building is the hub of Dulwich Prep life. The ground floor consists of the main entrance to the school, with the school office to the left of the double doors. It is also where you can find our Head Master’s Office and meeting rooms.

At the top of the Link Building, you’ll find our wonderfully light-filled, purpose-built Art studio. The main studio contains specialist equipment for drawing, painting, mixed media work, and a variety of printmaking processes. The department also features a separate area for ceramics and sculpting, as well as an ICT area specifically designed for photography, digital art, and animation work.

Medical Centre and Wellbeing Suite

Our brand new Wellbeing Suite, consisting of the Wellbeing and Medical Rooms, provides boys with a space where they can relax, play games, draw, chat and, if they want to, share their thoughts and feelings. Situated at the heart of the school site, and coordinated by our School Counsellor, Ms Veronica Braviner Roman, and School Nurse, Ms Kate Warren, the Wellbeing Suite combines physical and mental health support in a purpose created environment.

Sports Hall

The Sports Hall is a brilliant facility which is used by Years 3-8 for both PE and Games. It is regularly used before and after school as part of our Clubs provision. It is fully equipped to host basketball, badminton, short tennis, indoor hockey and gymnastics. The floor lends itself to being an astounding cricket facility with 4 adult sized nets. Alongside this, we are fortunate enough to have a climbing wall that is used weekly and fit for 6-8 climbers plus an instructor.

The Sports Hall is overlooked by a superb multifunctional Gallery space which is host to all of our Pre-Prep PE lessons, shooting club, table tennis, fencing and dance. Both spaces are used for external hire in the local community, outside of school hours.

The Hugh Woodcock Music School

The Hugh Woodcock Music School is a purpose-built facility used by all the children in Pre Prep, Lower, Middle and Upper Schools.  It comprises a 300 seater Concert Hall, foyer and exhibition space, including a Blüthner boudoir grand piano, classroom and computer suite, 14 teaching / practice rooms and small group rehearsal spaces.

Dining Hall and Drama Studio

The Drama Studio is used as a specialist teaching space for timetabled lessons. With its high-tech sound and lighting system, it also serves as a versatile studio theatre. It is a multi-purpose space, which hosts Drama classes from Pre-Prep through to Year 8, in addition to a variety of performances, exams and clubs. The open space enables active workshop-style lessons in which pupils have the freedom to move, collaborate and perform. Equipped to seat an audience of up to 150 people, the venue is in the style of a black box theatre which allows for flexible staging and audience engagement.

The dining hall is a vast, bright space where the boys can sit down with their peers each day and enjoy a freshly prepared, nutritious meal. Boys can choose from soup, freshly baked bread, hot food options, seasonal salads and puddings. All dietary requirements are catered for and all food on-site is completely nut free.

Library

The Library is a welcoming space for boys from Years 1 – Year 8 to discover new and exciting fiction and non-fiction books. Each section of the school has its own area in the Library, populated with inspiring and age-appropriate books. A full-time Librarian is always on hand to help the boys with research, borrowing and reading books.  The library encourages critical and active think allowing the boys to develop their own informed opinions on literature and current affairs.

Lower School

The Lower School (Year 3 and 4) boasts large, modern classrooms where the boys are taught for the majority of their lessons, visiting specialist teaching rooms for lessons such as DT and Music. At break and lunchtimes, the boys can’t wait to get out onto the playground, where they enjoy clambering over the Fort and playing with the outdoor chess board. The Fort playground often acts as the backdrop to Lower School themed dress up days (Greek, Roman and Ocean day to name but a few).

Mary Datchelor Playing Fields

Mary Datchelor is primarily used for Morning Games sessions by Years 3 to 8. It plays host to training and fixtures for football, rugby and cricket. As well as this, it is fitted with a 300m athletics track in the Summer. Brilliant events such as Tribe Cross Country and Sports Day take place here.

The Pennock Centre

Opened in 2012, this building houses three superbly equipped science labs, a cookery room and a DT workshop. Each of the light-filled science labs is fitted with state-of-the-art equipment including an 84” touchscreen panel and a set of iPads. There is an observatory with an array of high-tech telescopes nestling amongst the Solar Panels on the ‘Green’ roof. The DT lab combines old technology with new technology, boasting two 3D printers, a laser cutter and a computer suite in which the boys can learn how to design in 2D and 3D.

The Pre-Prep

The Pre-Prep boys have most of their lessons in their own fabulous space. The bright airy classrooms open onto their own garden and play spaces. The multipurpose hall is used for assemblies, productions and PE lessons although the boys have access to other facilities on this site. There is also an art room, library and IT suite.

Swimming Pool

The 25 metre, 6 lane pool is used by all the boys on this site. Weekly swimming lessons begin in Year 1 and are supplemented by clubs and squads higher up the school. Our swimming teams are very successful with our boys regularly gaining National rankings and trophies. We also run our own very popular Saturday swim school.

Eco Area

This outside classroom features a mud kitchen to practise cooking skills, a digging area to enable children to hunt for treasure, and a bug hotel – designed and built by the children for a variety of creepy-crawly guests.

Nursery Classrooms

These vibrant, creative learning spaces are specifically designed for 3 – 4 year old boys and girls. They are replete with dedicated areas for construction, writing, maths and role play, with bountiful age-appropriate books and resources. There is a carpet for class discussions as well as an outside area. Teachers facilitate focused and independent learning. Everything has been designed to encourage the children to be self-sufficient and to take responsibility – including tidying away at the end of the day. All the learning reflects the seven areas of the EYFS ( PSED, Communication & Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Maths, Understanding of the World, and Expressive, Arts and Design).

Playground

This purpose-built environment has been designed to present a variety of challenges for the children. There is a pirate ship and scramble gym for climbing, a road for riding bikes and scooters, a small pitch for role-play football, as well as opportunities for music and engagement with the natural world, such as bug-hunting and a mud kitchen. In essence, it serves as an additional outdoor classroom.

Reception Classrooms

These dynamic, interactive learning spaces enable 4-5 year old boys to develop fast and independently. Teachers engage the boys with focused lessons such as, RWI (Read Write Inc) phonics, maths, topics, handwriting, 1:1 reading, art, and model-making and encourage them to extend their knowledge and skills by exploring by themselves or with others. The boys’ learning is practical, uses all their senses, and is tailored to their specific needs. The classrooms, featuring both inside and outside areas, are divided into clearly-defined zones to enable the boys to access everything independently.

Sandpits

The Sandpits allow children to explore their imagination through role-play, investigate maths concepts such as capacity and weight, and develop PSED skills as they learn to take turns with one another.

The Drum

Parents can sit and relax in this bright, welcoming entrance area while they wait to meet staff.

The Hall

This multi-purpose space is used extensively by all Early Years children at different times. There are three assemblies a week, focusing on our golden rules to encourage good behaviour, an Excellent Learning programme to help children think about the process of acquiring skills and knowledge effectively, as well as celebrations of special occasions. As a multi-faith school, we learn about Diwali, Eid el Fitr, Holi, Christmas, and Easter, as well as marking other traditions, such as May Day and St George’s Day.

The hall is also used for our before and after school care service, known as Rainbow club. This provides a cosy environment to help children prepare for the day, with breakfast, or wind down afterwards, with free play and time in the playground.

In addition, we use the hall for interventions (either 1:1 or small groups), PE on wet days, music twice a week (the children play instruments, dance and move, and sing), all-school events such as Maths Day and shows – the Christmas Nativity and Winter Performances.

Woodlands

The Early Years Department is adjacent to some delightful woodland. This provides children with an opportunity to learn about the natural environment, take risks (there are lots of little clearings), work in teams, and take on challenges such as building dens.

Early Years Playing Fields

This part of our four-acre site is used by Early Years pupils at playtimes, for PE, and for special events such as Sports Day and Picnic Day (held jointly with Year One boys). It is used by the whole school at various times.
